Alan Skidmore was born in Liverpool and later attended Southport Art College.

Alan, known as Skid, started working in repertory theatre in 1966 as assistant to the designer.

Since then he has worked and specialised in scenic art, painting sets for theatres all over Britain, such as The Royal Lyceum and King's Theatres in Edinburgh, Citizens' Glasgow and Pitlochry Festival Theatre before moving to London, where he painted for the Royal Shakespeare Company, Royal Opera House, English National Opera and numerous West End Theatres. He has also worked for Northern Opera, Kent Opera, Wexford Festival, the Bregenz Festival in Austria and shows for Paris and Lyon in France and theatres in Wales and Ireland.

During these years he was developing his own practice and now devotes all his time to smaller scale landscape and architectural painting. As well as painting "en pleine aire", he offers a service, painting on commission, peoples' homes, boats, cars or favourite holiday views and memories. Skid works in watercolour or oil and can work from photographs - translating your favourite snapshot into a painting. This skill was acquired over many years of turning designers work, sometimes very small drawings, into vast backdrops for the theatre. The work can be on any scale from very small to as large as the client requests.

Skid also paints murals and themed decorations in children's bedrooms using trompe l'oeil techniques or adapting favourite characters from children's books and comics. Please get in touch for further details.
